Introduction to Rules

Whether your rules are being followed or broken often determine your happiness. Rules are basically what you believe must happen for you to feel successful or happy. For example, one of your rules could be “Every person must show me respect because I am…” However, such a rule is set up for unhappiness because it is:

  1. Impossible to meet: Since not everybody will respect you
  2. Can’t control the outcome: You can’t control whether someone respect you even though you can behave in a way that hope to get respect.
  3. More ways to feel bad than good: This rule is easily not met because you want everybody to respect you which means even if one person close to you in your life disrepect you, you will feel upset.

If your rule is impossible to meet, or you cannot control whether your rule is met or your rule can make you feel bad more easily than feel good, then your life is setup for unhappiness. Rules are beliefs that we have about what must happen for us to feel good or bad, or what we must or must not do. Many of us create rules that make us feel bad more easily than feel good and happy. To feel happier in life, you just need to change your rules so that you can feel good more easily. Next, consider whether your current rules are appropriate for who you want to become. For each of our key values, ask yourself “What has to happen in order for me to feel ____”. For example, “What has to happened in order for me to feel that I’m successful?” If you feel upset or angry with someone, it is often caused by your rules rather than the person’s behavior.

The Tool

Rules alignment tool aims to help you change your rules to ones that can make you feel happier. You will first enter your existing rule for each value, such as “Love”, and answer the 3 questions to decide whether there is a need to change your rules. If there is a need to change your rules, the tool will guide you how to change your rules that will enable you to feel good more easily.
